India clinched the ICC Champions Trophy on March 9, 2025, with a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the final held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
New Zealand batted first, setting a target of 252 runs, bolstered by notable contributions from Daryl Mitchell (63) and Michael Bracewell (53 not out). India’s spinners, particularly Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy, played a pivotal role in restricting New Zealand’s total.
In response, Indian captain Rohit Sharma led from the front, scoring a crucial 76 runs and earning the Player of the Match award. Despite a late surge from New Zealand’s bowlers, India achieved the target with nine balls to spare, with KL Rahul remaining unbeaten at 34.
This victory marked India’s third ICC Champions Trophy title, having previously won in 2002 and 2013. It also underscored India’s dominance in recent ICC events, as they have lost only one match in the last three tournaments.
Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand was named Player of the Tournament for his consistent performances throughout the competition.
The final was notable for India’s perceived ‘home’ advantage, as all their matches were played in spin-friendly Dubai, a neutral venue chosen due to political tensions between India and Pakistan.
In the post-match press conference, Rohit Sharma addressed retirement rumors, stating he has no plans to retire from the 50-over format, emphasizing his focus on the team’s success.
